Fool Me Twice, Shame On ME! -HNM007

"Fool Me Twice, Shame on ME!"

Welcome to the Holbrook New Media Audio Feed. We do Audio, Video, Content Creation, and That Other Stuff. holbrooknewmedia.com

This is Jeffrey K. Holbrook. Work schedules can be chaotic in December when you work for the U.S. Postal Service. Because of this, Geoff Blanchard and I were not able to get together for the weekly Geoff and Jeffrey Show. Instead, as a nod to my original podcast, Daggers Of The Mind, I am taking a quote from a famous person, and giving a few thoughts I had on the subject.

Today's quote is from Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, The second President of the United States.

"We have too many high-sounding words, and too few actions that correspond with them."

As we go out into the world every day we expect to encounter others and we expect to be talking to them. These days with all the connectivity and social media, Even retired or handicapped persons who spend most of their time at home have a lot of conversations. We know we will be talking today, but what will we actually DO?

Many of us seem to spend a lot of time trying to impress others with what we say. This goes all the way from the highest politicians to the guy who only uses heavy profanity when playing card games with his buddies.

The political aim is to sell the voters on you as a candidate. You need to convince them to vote for you instead of someone else who is spouting just as much jargon as you are. Many candidates are totally successful simply because they can speak so "high sounding" that you forget or don't even try to discover what they have actually done, and instead listen to how great they say they are. That is the essence of a sales job. Instead of sleight of hand, it is sleight of mouth.

It's a diversion of the sort that makes sure you don't pay any attention to the flaws and faults that are inherent in every political position.

By the way, we know there are flaws in EVERY political philosophy simply because every candidate who ever made it into office has promised to basically "fix it all". We can all attest to the idea that this has never happened. Not even once. Ok, so much for believing political talk.

Now, what about the guy who has a great vocabulary until he is spending time with his poker buddies? What is his motivation to impress?

Since 4 words out of every ten probably start with the letter "F", this really can't be to illustrate his amazing command of the English language. He does much better when he is at the office, where he is trying to impress on his superiors that he is a completely different kind of person.

This is the reason we really can't go with anything anybody says anywhere that is not backed up by the deeds they do and the life they live. The old saying that "talk is cheap" is totally true, but at the same time, if you take someone at their word that has lived a life contrary to what they are saying, another saying comes into play. I heard Scotty on the original Star Trek series say this. "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me!"

Be ever vigilant and do your homework. Don't believe what is being said simply because it is a comfortable concept that is something you would really LIKE to hear. Be willing to listen to unpleasant truths that are actually the literal truth. The proof is in the walk of the person who is doing the speaking.

On the flip side, always make sure you are acting in accordance with what you say. Actually, you will act naturally in unguarded moments, so it is better said that you should say what you really mean. Actual truth. These days, it is considered relative to the situation, and many believe that this moment's "truth" is anything that gets them what they want now.

When someone lies to you, even once, how could you ever trust them again? How could anyone ever trust YOU again? It has long been a goal of mine to be considered one of the truly honest people in a world that is chock full of liars. How will you be remembered? Your legacy is more important than you think.

A final quote from St. Francis of Assisi:

"It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching."

Is Australian Style Gun Confiscation The Answer? -HNM006

"Is Australian Style Gun Confiscation The Answer?"

Welcome to the Holbrook New Media Audio Feed. We do Audio, Video, Content Creation, and That Other Stuff. holbrooknewmedia.com

Due to work schedules, there won't be a Geoff & Jeffrey show this week, but I am releasing a shorter conversation Geoff and I had on gun ownership in Australia and the U.S.

In 1996, Australia passed a law that gave gun owners 2 years grace period to voluntarily turn in their guns, or to be prosecuted for gun ownership thereafter.

I will include links to various articles on the subject in the show notes at holbrooknewmedia.com.

In our conversation on the subject, Geoff, being Australian, gives me his take on gun ownership in general and also differences he sees in the idea of owning guns in both the U.S, and Australia.

Obama Did NOT Ban The Pledge of Allegiance -Geoff & Jeffrey #17

Greetings! Welcome to the Holbrook New Media Audio Feed. We do audio, video, content creation, and that other stuff. holbrooknewmedia.com.

Today on Episode 17 of The Geoff & Jeffrey show, here are some of the things we are talking about:

Our live recording time is not very conducive to people being awake while it is going on. 6:00am Eastern time and 8:00 Australian time.

Ms Ileane Smith left a comment on Geoff's YouTube Channel where the video version of the show is posted. https://www.youtube.com/user/glider1b

A correction from Episode 16: President Obama did NOT ban the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag.

Jeffrey's image on this episode is very jittery, but the audio sounds great once we used Jeffrey's local recording.

A comparison of the video applications Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro.

An update on two of the podcasts that Jeffrey has been helping to get started.

You are better to go ahead and get started with the risk of doing it wrong instead of not moving at all and accomplishing nothing.

Discussing our sound treatment and mic arrangements with our new setup.

Trying to hangup and reconnect on Skype didn't help with the jerky video on Jeffrey's end.

The "Indian Telemarketers" tried to call again.

Jeffrey has had so many inquiries about podcasting that he made a resource page on his website. You can access it at PodcastCurious.com.

Geoff found that it was cheaper to buy an Australian microphone in California and take it home than to buy it locally in Australia.

Australia is the largest producer of natural gas. They sell it to Japan, but the Japanese prices are 25% cheaper than it is in Australia where it is actually produced.

Companies fight the reduction of product demand instead of preparing for what is next in the industry.

Getting along with people with opposite points of view. Just being able to discuss things in an unemotional manner.

Geoff has the impression that Americans are rarely living where they were raised, it seems its about constantly moving to where the best job is.

Jeffrey just had his 30th anniversary working for the U.S. Postal Service.

Always be nice to your children since they will be picking your nursing home.

When you get older you schedule fun activities around the doctor's appointments.

Girls were not interested in computers or online until the tech was taken out of the way and you could easily get on and chat.

Tech is moving so quickly. More all the time.

Modern uses for out of date computers. Early computers we remember:

From Blab To Skype With A Dash of Wirecast -Geoff & Jeffrey #16

Greetings! Welcome to the Holbrook New Media Audio Feed. We do audio, video, content creation, and that other stuff. holbrooknewmedia.com.

Today on Episode 16 of The Geoff & Jeffrey show, here are some of the things we are talking about:

Blab.im has died a quiet death, leaving us orphans, but Geoff, being the fancy video expert, has set us up using Wirecast and Skype. This gives new versatility, improves both the audio and video and streams live on YouTube at the same time!
Blab was primarily expected to be used as a video version of Facebook, but many people started doing shows and only being on once a week. So, it looks like we killed it.

The new version of Wirecast is pretty expensive, but has NDI, (Network Device Interface), which allows you to bring any computer on your network into play.
Jeffrey has found that it is possible to record a Skype call with his Audio Technica AT2005usb and Zoom H5 recorder. Usually, it requires a larger mixer that has enough Auxillary Sends, or special software that takes up system resources from Skype.

On Tech Down Over, the guest was Anthony Artis a writer and educator about videography.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ob1Y6kOS4c

Books by Anthony Artis:

The Shut Up and Shoot Documentary Guide: A Down & Dirty DV Production

The Shut Up and Shoot Freelance Video Guide: A Down & Dirty DV Production

Jeffrey is thrilled with the launch of a friend's podcast that he helped with. It has amazing sound, and great content. Check it out:

http://remnantbiblefellowship.libsyn.com/

Geoff played a short demo for the show that is going to be played on episode 80 of The Feed, the Official Libsyn Podcast. Libsyn is the podcast hosting company that Jeffrey uses for the podcast version of Geoff & Jeffrey: The Weekly Catch Up.

A discussion of how a show such as ours and Tech Down Over can sometimes have a hard time deciding who's turn it is to talk.

YouTube is inconsistent in enforcing the copyright laws sometimes.

Major News services reported that President Obama had banned the American Pledge of Allegience. We discuss this, thinking it is real, but found out later it was a hoax.

Geoff mispelled Holbrook on Jeffrey's lower third. hehehe! Mispellings of our names in general.

Advances in tech, like in the Vincent Price movie, "The Abominable Dr Phibes". He was so deformed, he had developed a way to plug in on the back of his neck to communicate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Abominable_Dr._Phibes

How cities in the U.S. are closely crowded compared to Australia.

"My Shadow" By Robert Lewis Stevenson -HNM005

This is Jeffrey K. Holbrook.

Welcome to the the audio feed from holbrooknewmedia.com.

I recently started working on a few projects with with J.D. Sutter over at Porchlight Family Media. They have a show called Verses in Vox. They are taking classic works of poetry, and have them performed by a voice actor, then original music is composed, and original photography and artwork is made.

When all is produced and made ready by the 5 or 6 people involved, it is released. You really need to go to verses.porchlightfamilymedia.com to listen to the various amazing productions.

Before getting involved with these projects, I hadn't really gotten much into classic poetry, but I have really been finding a new dimension to these treasures.
Today, with permission, I am presenting "My Shadow" by Robert Lewis Stevenson, in its entirety.

Term Limits For Everyone! -Geoff & Jeffrey #15

Greetings! Welcome to the Holbrook New Media Audio Feed. We do audio, video, content creation, and that other stuff. holbrooknewmedia.com.

Today on Episode #15 The Geoff & Jeffrey show, here are some of the things we are talking about:

Blab will let you schedule two Blabs with identical names by assigning a unique number to each.

Geoff added some more bling to the screen on the video version of the show.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzTdSPwXis0

Jeffrey got a new coffee cup sporting the various expressions of Darth Vader. He is drinking Chai tea. Unlike most Americans, Jeffrey believes all tea should be hot.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea

Geoff listens to podcasting while walking to see his mother, while Jeffrey listens while driving to and from work.

A long commute gives you time to think and get mentally prepared for your day.

You are more apt to be late for work if you live closely than if you have a long commute.

Jeffrey let Geoff hear a demo he made for episode #11 that has been submitted to libsyn.com for The Feed podcast. It is the episode with Ms. Ileane Smith as a guest.

http://holbrooknewmedia.com/2016/08/01/ms-ileane-is-a-big-time-smarty-pants-gj11/

Some in the U.S. say that Skype has been more reliable lately, but Geoff says it has been woeful lately for him.

Some drones have a 3x zoom lens on them now. One even has a 16x zoom. Some can be controlled by 4G, so can be controlled in other states.

Example of a drone with a camera

The only people who are restricted by new laws are those who abide by the laws anyway.

Geoff thinks that a good behavior early release is crazy since we are all expected to be on good behavior anyway.

Government action usually involves the making or saving of money.

Jeffrey's wedding anniversary is on Mickey Mouse's birthday, Nov. 18th.

A discussion of the political systems of both Australia and the U.S.

Geoff has been watching YouTube videos of abandoned places.

Gambling VS the stock market.

The "Indian Telemarketers" Don't Want To Talk - Geoff & Jeffrey #14

Greetings! Welcome to the Holbrook New Media Audio Feed. We do audio, video, content creation, and that other stuff. holbrooknewmedia.com.

On episode 14 of The Geoff & Jeffrey Show, here are some of the things we are talking about:
----------------------------------------------------------
Jeffrey is doing the show from his daughter's apartment in Indiana. A discussion of his mobile gear.
http://holbrooknewmedia.com/recording-gear/

Jeffrey has found that the domain names he let expire at the last show are unwilling to go quietly.

Sometimes you can get a better deal on something if you go away and check back later.

Geoff gets a call from the "Indian Telemarketers" but they don't want to talk.

Jeffrey laughs out loud at Geoff's video version of the show.
https://www.youtube.com/user/glider1b

Windows 10 boots up a lot quicker than both of our original Windows 7 computers.

Windows 8 was really bad, in that it gave you touch screen features to use even when you didn't have a touch screen.

Audio and video editing are really better suited for a mouse and keyboard than on a touch screen.

Having a second monitor can increase your productivity.

Geoff shows his Logitech wireless keyboard, that is actually solar so it doesn't need to keep changing batteries. The coolness of solar.

Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750

Geoff uses his Mac computer for personal things and a PC for all work related activity.

Funny things seen at Walmart, including people wearing pajama pants.

Discussing the casual manner of dress adopted by today's society.

Both "Fannie" and "Randy" mean different things in Australia and the U.S.

Quick access to relevant info online is getting more amazing all the time.

This also means that ads are much more targeted than they used to be.

Doing the show from an untreated room like Jeffrey is doing illustrates the value of using a dynamic mic instead of a condenser to control unwanted noise and echo.

Dogs Don't Like That New Car Smell -Geoff & Jeffrey #13

Greetings! Welcome to the Holbrook New Media Audio Feed. We do audio, video, content creation, and that other stuff. holbrooknewmedia.com.

Today on episode 13 of The Geoff & Jeffrey show, here are some of the things we are talking about:

Geoff is feeling somewhat better from last week and has hidden his microphone.

Trying to keep from being overwhelmed by social media. Many lack common courtesy.

Life is so hectic because people make it that way themselves. The urgency of phone messaging in many people's lives.

Families don't talk much since phones have so much interaction and info available.

So much is available that it is hard to find exactly what you are looking for.

Google photos have so many photos it would take 427 years to quickly flick through all the images.

Geoff thought the Union Contract voice over that Jeffrey let him hear last week was done well. http://www.apwu133.com/APWUContractAward2016.mp3

Jeffrey has two domain names, dot coms, that he has allowed to expire today.

A discussion of domains and the problem with sites that have owners who have identical names.

The importance of having an identifying photo so people know it is you when they find all those accounts with the same name.

It is possible to have an online persona that keeps your true identity hidden.

Geoff says dogs and cameras don't mix.

A Moratorium on "Clant Plosings" -Geoff & Jeffrey #12

Greetings! Welcome to the Holbrook New Media Audio Feed.

We do audio, video, content creation, and that other stuff. holbrooknewmedia.com.

Today on Episode 12 of The Geoff & Jeffrey show, here are some of the things we are talking about:

Geoff faked out Jeffrey with a plane crash photo from Universal Studios War of the Worlds exhibit.

A comparison of celsius in Australia and fahrenheit in the U.S.. http://www.rapidtables.com/convert/temperature/how-celsius-to-fahrenheit.htm

Geoff's using a more simple setup, and Jeffrey is sporting some new sound treatment.

Jeffrey's older brother loves the show and says he likes it better than Jeffrey's earlier podcasting efforts.

Younger people seem to interpret podcasting as the free exchange of ideas in conversation, not a scripted thing like public radio.

Geoff likes the No Agenda show with John C. Dvorak and Adam Curry. http://www.noagendashow.com/

High megapixel cameras are really getting up there. The differences in the old film method of photography and the new methods of digital.

Jeffrey's first 35mm film camera was a used Yashica TL Super. He got it to learn about how aperatures and shutter speeds interacted. http://www.mikeeckman.com/2015/12/quick-review-yashica-tl-super-1966/

The balance between good composition and just blazing away taking hundreds of images.

Jeffrey got a taste of the eLearning module work that Geoff usually does by doing a voice over of the announcement of the highlights of the new union contract for the American Postal Workers Union. http://www.apwu133.com/

Geoff says that it is much easier to do voice over work that you are personally invested in, as opposed to general voice over work.

Different audio takes seem to have a slightly different sound if you don't do them in one sitting.

Most union websites have only text and very few do audio.

No matter what you do, some people will like it, and some will not.

Adobe Captivate has a good text to speech feature.

Another Verses In Vox episode was released that Jeffrey did the voice over for. "The Children's Hour" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. holbrooknewmedia.com/verses2

We explore some features on Blab that Geoff discovered. blab.im

Comparing Geoff getting into Blab easier directly with a webcam and mic as opposed to using Wirecast.

Geoff's Rode NTG-2 shotgun mic.

Track pads, vs trackball mouse, vs conventional mouse.

Looking around our studios on the video.

Ms Ileane Is A Big Time Smarty Pants! -GJ11

Greetings! Welcome to the Holbrook New Media Audio Feed.

We do audio, video, content creation, and that other stuff. holbrooknewmedia.com. We had a special guest today on Episode 11 of The Geoff & Jeffrey show, Ms. Ileane Smith. She is a social media guru extraordinaire, and a good friend of Jeffrey's.

Here are some of the things we are talking about:

Blab and Wirecast don't always play well together.

Huge flooding in West Virginia with massive property damage and more than 20 killed. Flood Image Album by Aimee Mullinex Ramsey
http://www.redcross.org/local/west-virginia

Jeffrey's friends at the Cinema Toast Crunch Podcast had knee high water in their podcasting space. http://cinematoastcrunch.libsyn.com/podcast-space-flooded

Something eerie... Jeffrey actually recorded over 15 minutes of the storm that flooded everyone out. Don't forget the victims once the news coverage subsides. http://holbrooknewmedia.com/2016/06/29/wv-flood-thunderstorm-recording-6-23-16-hnm003/

Why do people continue to live in chronic disaster areas? Geoff says there isn't much potential for natural disasters in Melbourne, Australia.

Jeffrey recounts one of the most tragic deaths.

History records show us that many people have lived with much more tragedy than we face.

Bill Dewees charges $20 per finished minute on eLearning modules. Geoff likes how Bill covers both the voicing and the business side of voice over.
http://www.billdewees.com/

Ms. Ileane tells it like it is. She is big time smarty pants. : http://ileanesmith.com

She has been recording her podcast on Blab, but may be switching to Huzza. It is integrated with Patreon. https://huzza.io/ https://www.patreon.com/

The time to service social media is at a premium for most of us that work full time.

Not sure of the future of Blab, and Ileane says you always have to have a plan "B".

Here is were to find all of Ms. Ileane's tutorials for various social media platforms. http://youtube.com/msileanespeaks

Online streaming is discussed by Geoff and Ileane while Jeffrey mainly listens since he really doesn't know much about it. hehehe!

Geoff loves Larry Becker's short videos with cool video tips. Ms. Ileane is going to check it out. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPHRJZTubEomgFO8EiO-0YA

Scott Kelby is a fancy photography and Adobe Photoshop guru guy. Jeffrey participated in a Kelby Photowalk in Charleston, West Virginia.
https://www.youtube.com/user/kelbymediagroup

Geoff made a video with Kolin the Koala. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzIqXJKm3gE

The old TWAIN scanning acronym stands for Technology Without An Important Name.

Using old computers for specialty uses that have been phased out in newer incarnations of software.

Some people come to Blab to learn English.

The Children's Hour -HNM004

Today, with permission, I am presenting "The Children's Hour", in its entirety.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/vc_vigilant/

Geoff did a professional video that could make the Melbourne, Australia tourism authorities jealous. He describes his techniques.
https://youtu.be/d2zpYzaswak

Geoff has a water proof GoPro camera, but finds it awkward to use.

YouTube, Vimeo and podcasting give you good reason to present good production techniques.

Jeffrey's highest rate of pay ever was $33 dollars a second. It was for a 3 second run of an image in a film.

The relationship of filming time VS. actual time on screen.

The possibility of having your web cam hacked.

Jeffrey's pick of the week. theaudacitytopodcast.com. Daniel J. Lewis has National Association of Broadcasters Show new product videos.

How great Audacity is as an audio editing program. http://www.audacityteam.org/

WV Flood Thunderstorm Recording 6-23-16- HNM003

Welcome to a special edition of the Holbrook New Media Audio Feed. holbrooknewmedia.com

In the early morning hours of June 23rd, 2016, I recorded more than 15 minutes of a thunderstorm. Little did I know the devastation it would cause in our state of West Virginia. Lives have been changed forever with the loss of homes, businesses and with the more than 20 deaths attributed to this event.

While many types of disasters can affect your home and loved ones, there is none quite like a flood. A few days of torrential rain can cause a condition in a mountainous region like West Virginia that is rather unique. You can see water rising toward your home during the rain, but after it stops, and you think it's over, the water continues to rise from the runoff out of the mountains.

In slow motion, over a few hours as you watch in complete helplessness, the water rises, and rises. It finally enters your home and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Then it goes up and up, 2 feet, 4 feet, 6 feet, etc, and finally stops rising and then slowly subsides.

If your home is not washed away, in a flash flood area, then you are left with a massive cleanup in a very toxic enviroment. Waste treatment facilities get over run and chemical storage areas that flood turn the waters into a toxic soup that creates an incredible public health danger.

The most surprising thing I encountered helping with flood relief in the past was on the interior of a friend's house. There was around 10 inches of hard packed sand on the floors that had to be chipped away before any cleaning could take place.
Another issue is the fact that tetanus shots need to be administered to all who are helping with the cleanup. I heard today that the American Red Cross does not have the shots available here.

Please help the Red Cross, and local organizations and churches who are feeding the workers and helping those affected by the devastation of their homes, and from the many deaths attributed to the flood.

One final note. Please don't drive into the stricken areas just to take pictures. Clogging up the relief areas for your own satisfaction of seeing a spectacle creates even more problems. There are hundreds of images on Facebook already. If you aren't coming in to help, just don't come at all.

In the show notes for this episode at holbrooknewmedia.com, you will find links for the West Virginia regional Red Cross site and a flood image album by Aimee Mullinex Ramsey.

Thank you so much for your help and prayers. Here is the recording of the thunderstorm. I just wish the circumstances could have been different.

Night Sounds- Actually Listening to Nature

This is Jeffrey K. Holbrook

Welcome to the Holbrook New Media Audio Feed

------------------------------------------------
Today's quote is from Albert Einstein

"Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better."

When was the last time you listened to nature? Most of are stopped in our tracks when we see a glorious sunset, a rainbow or even a tornado or hurricane. When we are distracted by our sense of sight, the sound track of nature is only an accompaniment. Today, I plan to give you some nature to actually LISTEN to.

What you are hearing in the back ground is a recording I got by placing my Zoom H2N digital audio recorder on a guardrail on a road near my home. It is taking a 360 degree image of the area. The night sounds are amazing. Take the time to really listen and sense what is actually going on.

Usually we hear night sounds as a single massive sound that is just in the background. There are many components and patterns to these sounds, and closing your eyes and really listening for a while can be very rewarding.

I will warn you, that two cars pass, one in each direction, and while it seems it is going to get too loud, I have placed a limiter on them to keep it from getting overwhelming. Still, if you are listening in headphones, it can be pretty intimidating. See if you are tough enough to hang in there as you hear the cars getting closer and louder, and then as they subside.

Please, please take the time to listen, really listen to nature, and all the world around you.

The Expected Final Quote:

"One learns more from listening than speaking. And both the wind and the people who continue to live close to nature still have much to tell us which we cannot hear within university walls."

Thor Heyerdahl

I'll stop talking now and give you the opportunity to hear the night sounds. Some will listen for a moment or two and won't see the use of this exercise. Many just can't still their mind long enough to do something that doesn't have a quick return benefit they can see up front.

There there are others however, that are capable of opening up their minds to new things, exploring if you will, and they are the ones who can discover great riches of a kind most of the world will never see. Enjoy the serenade!

In addition, some of the voice acting, and voice over content we produce at Holbrook New Media will be made available here, and last but not least, the weekly video show I do with Geoff Blanchard of Australia on Blab.im. It's called Geoff and Jeffrey; The Weekly Catch Up.

-------------------------------
Today we are comparing opposing quotes from Karl Marx, and Ronald Reagan.

Karl Marx, who coauthored "The Communist Manifesto" with Frederich Engels

"The meaning of peace is the absence of opposition to socialism."

-----------------

Ronald Reagan, Former President of the United States.

"Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means."

-----------------

I am not sure if anyone has noticed, but things have been getting pretty harsh lately. Social media has taken up the mantle of the presidential races. People who have been fast friends and would never say a cross word in person, feel so safe behind their keyboards and screens that permanent damage is being done to lifetime relationships.

I lamented the loss of civility in society in episodes of Daggers Of The Mind, but this time it is on steroids.

The presidential campaigns currently in progress have reached new lows when it comes to personal attacks, and the people are following suit. It is a similar situation to getting bad service at a restaurant. If the hostess is mean, and then you find that your server, and also the cashier is mean, then you need to look at the manager for the source of the problem. That business probably won't last very long since people won't tolerate the harsh attitude and will go somewhere else to eat.

In this case, it seems everyone really wishes they had someone else to vote for, but sadly, we are stuck with the choices we have. The harshness goes all the way down the line, and now we are at each other's throats.

While the the philosophical differences couldn't be more different between Karl Marx and Ronald Reagan, I am not going to concentrate on that. It is the attitude displayed on these two quotes that will illustrate today's point.
Let there be peace. Peace is great. Everybody wants peace. Both Mr. Marx and Mr. Reagan wanted peace. The only problem I can see is they have a totally different definition of what it takes to get there.

First Mr. Marx. Peace will be achieved when he gets everything he wants, and it doesn't matter one whit what anybody else wants or needs. The old saying, "my way or the highway" comes to mind. No one else has any right to express an opinion, no right to want anything other than what he wants, it just isn't important, and it's time to get with the program. Once everyone falls in line, we will have peace.

Unless you are the one making up the rules, this would kind of grate on your sensibilities. You are telling everyone else what they have to do. When everyone recognizes your superior intellect at arriving at the best way for everyone to live, conflict will cease, and peace will reign. At least for a while.

There are many today on social media that scream their way to prominence and are just sure that everyone with half a brain can see the light because of the loudness of their delivery. How egotistical can you get? The harsh and narcisistic rants suppose an IQ that is impossible for the opposition to achieve. It's so obvious because no one could believe that way if they were in any way intelligent.

Oh, by the way, shouting another person down is not done because the shouter has a superior argument, it is because that person's argument is very weak, and it is imperative that no one else has the chance to challenge it.

Any person who truly has confidence in the rightness of their convictions has no fear, and does not shrink from testing their ideas in the crucible of debate. That is where Mr. Reagan's philosophy comes in. It bears repeating:

"Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means."

This approach requires a boat load of confidence in the basic rightness of your position, but at the same time a willingness to hash it out with the opposition and then to come up with the absolute best solution, that may, oh my goodness, contain elements of both sides. What a revolutionary concept.

OK, let's get this straight, actually LISTEN, to the other side, and have an intelligent discussion of the issues, THEN make a decision? It is pretty obvious that not much of this is happening today.

Another quote:

"Civility is not not saying negative or harsh things. It is not the absence of critical analysis. It is the manner in which we are sharing this territorial freedom of political discussion. If our discourse is yelled and screamed and interrupted and patronized, that's uncivil."

Richard Dreyfuss

Some may say that the harsh sarcasm and ridicule I have been decrying in this episode is actually being employed to illustrate my points here. If you truly believe so, let's all sit down and have an honest and civil discussion about civility. I truly believe I can maintain both my manners and my wit in this type of conversation. Now the real question. Can you?
